It works on both craving and “addiction” centers in the brain. Contrave (Bupropion / Naltrexone combination) was released into the US market in 2016, and soon became one of the most advertised drug in the field. Yet, there was one catch here and that it was only tolerated by half of the folks who tried it (see side effects of each component below).

Wellbutrin

 (or Bupropion – for generic)

Originally an anti-depressant (also for adult attention deficit and seasonal affective disorder). It is commonly prescribed for quit smoking too. Now researched and recently used as part of a new weight loss drug (branded Contrave).

Common side effects of Wellbutin include but not limited to:

  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Increased heart rate

Most side effects above are mild and tend to improve with continued use. We usually start the prescription with once daily in morning for few days (1 week) and then increase to full dose (twice daily with or without food). We advise taking the second dose in early evening or late afternoon to limit sleep issues.

Note: Wellbutrin is also available in once daily XR pill (Wellbutrin XR)

Naltrexone

Naltrexone belongs to a class of drugs known as opiate antagonists. It works in the brain to prevent opiate effects (e.g., feelings of well-being, pain relief). This medication is also used to treat alcohol abuse. It can help people struggling with such addictions.

Common side effects of Naltrexone include but not limited to:

Nausea, headache, dizziness, anxiety, tiredness, and trouble sleeping may occur.
